The drop is always movingYou know that saying about standing on the shoulders of giants? Drupal is standing on a huge pile of midgetsAll content management systems suck, Drupal just happens to suck less.Popular open source software is more secure than unpopular open source software, because insecure software becomes unpopular fast. Acquia

According to drumm's graphs shown at Barcelona, I submit (by far) the most patches to the Drupal core. This matches my gut feelings, too. So, I guess some now expects me to write a long diatribe about how I fear Acquia will exploit and deform my work. These are probably the same naysayers who believes that Drupal does not learn from other OSS projects. Now these people should listen: you might think that you hold an Ace and a King, and you played it for the win, but you know what happens to those? They walk back to Houston. Good riddance! Everyone, hear me out: Acquia is the best thing ever happen to Drupal!

How anyone watching Dries working on Drupal, restless, not knowing day or night can presume his startup will hurt Drupal? Comparing to Mambo is just the typical bystander argument -- they are both CMSes so the comparison is valid, isn't it? NO! There the company actually funded the development from the beginning. On the other hand, we have a rather healthy community. Let's take a look at the history of the installer. Adrian Roussow from Bryght submitted the first version. CivicSpace payed various people over the course of two years to further it. Then some more people hammered it and landed in core. And then as Drupal progressed, the installer became prettier and more useable. Noone can claim it's his/her work now. And yet without that funding there would be no installer now. So this is what will happen: Acquia people will submit their work. The community will hammer into the shape it sits fit and then during subsequent releases the raw edges will be filed, nice ornaments will be put on them etc. And everyone will be happier because a company pays gifted people to work on Drupal, most important of them, Dries. Welcome, welcome Acquia!

I know I was not original in 2005 december, but still, I have predicted back then that "Drupal will march on, gradually becoming the Linux of the Web". This is happening now.

Karoly - This is great stuff. You sure do not evade a conflict if there is one as I have heard (and experienced today on #drupal). This can be debated but sure is not one thing: timid.

The Linux of the web is a very good slogan - since when is it around? Do away with "community plumbing". It makes me feel lika a Diorrhea coming on. ;)

Drupal - the linux of the web. And when we ARE the Linux on the web, we will not need this comparison anymore, Linux is gonna be the drupal of operating systems then and will be proud of that :-D

Rock on!
