There are now so many contrib modules that writing custom PHP code is rarely necessary (see Dries' deprecated meme). However, people still ask coding questions on IRC when they, in reality, need a contrib module. Observing this and seeing the strain it put on the developers who work on Drupal core and contrib, we have changed #drupal on irc.freenode.net to be the channel where Drupal is worked on: core, contrib, community etc and #drupal-support is where you need to be if you are working on a specific site. In other words, if your work ends up on drupal.org infrastructure somewhere then #drupal is the place to be.

But #drupal is still for code related stuff meant for core, contrib and community, right? #drupal-docs is for documentation and stuff like that. Did I get it right?
what changed is that previously we said "if you are in the browser, go to #drupal-support, all programing is in #drupal" but then people asked coding questions which really could be solved in the browser.
why not encourage contrib developers to put up a freenode channel & post it on their module page?
Only the biggest modules need that and they have it.
