It's fitting to start my book posts with http://www.amazon.com/Enders-Game-Ender-Book-1/dp/0812550706/ref=ed_oe_p because it's the Book for me. When I was a small kid, I was reading the kid section of the local library without much selection. Some years later it dawned on me that I read a very, very good book among those but the title escaped me so I went back to the library, browsing the books (not much change in the selection through the years, thanks god) and managed to find Ender's Game by it's cover. A decade later, I was in Orem, Utah at the first (so far, the only) EnderCon as the only European...

So what makes this book so compelling? On the surface it's a sci-fi about aliens and humanity fighting it. But below the surface, there are so many layers. Morality, pedagogy, bullying are just a few among the questions that are raised. It's used by today's marines and MBA teaching alike for these reasons. And of course, the book hits a nerve because some of the parallels with my own life.

Ender's Game and the rest of the series are some of my all-time favorite books. They're a great read and, as you said, have lots of thinking material as well.

It's funny though you came to Orem -- I live just down the road in Provo :) Hope you enjoyed your visit.
