Currently a mere 350 million people have broadband access. I expect this to jump a magnitude within less than ten years as smartphones and cheap laptops and 3G data makes broadband ubiquitous. We can add web services to this as another major traffic drive. They sold 13 million iPhones and Android is just starting. The storm is coming -- will your site stand or be blown away?
As it's apt for a new decade, new programming paradigms are coming. Of course, nothing is new under the sun in computing really, some old ideas suddenly make a lot more sense. Traditional media like Dr Dobb's Journal and blogs, both of database expert's and leading PHP programmer's all talk about how parallel, share-nothing processing is the future. We all have a lot to learn here. Your first step should be learning closures. We all are going to talk a lot about Map/Reduce.

I am wondering how important it is these days to treat handheld devices differently. Because most of these devices are now able to view "normal" sized websites, but its still tedious, scrolling etc.
